Biography

Darren Umbsaar was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, close enough to the Rockies that hiking and photography became lifelong habits from a young age. A self-taught painter, he began developing his technique alongside his academic studies, drawing inspiration from both contemporary impressionists and old masters. His work balances the rugged rawness of the mountains with their more idyllic, atmospheric qualities, built up through layered strokes of acrylic and, more recently, oil. He is equally drawn to sweeping alpine vistas and quieter, more intimate scenes, finding endless material in the vastness of the Rockies.

Umbsaar holds a BSc and MSc in Geology from the University of Calgary, a background that lends real structural and geological accuracy to his paintings of the mountains. He has painted full time since 2021 and is represented by galleries in Alberta and British Columbia.
