Biography

Debra L. Kiel loves her small town of Canmore nestled in Alberta’s
Rocky Mountains. Her acrylic paintings can be recognized by a majestic mountain with a quiet highway, a serene natural path or a historic back alley through an older area of her town. Both international guests and local residents enjoy analyzing her artwork to identify a specific location and relive their personal experience.

She claims her artwork is always inspired by how light illuminates an object or landscape, believing that light is what brings everything to life, brilliantly elevating subtle, magnificent colors to another level, with the duality that light cannot be understood without the shadows.
She says, “Ironically, it is the same duality when compared to life.”

Her style uses crisp detailed edges, giving the painting a sense of order. However, the combination of fine detail and abstract strokes, along with areas of light on dark, and dark on light, is what excites her!

Debra is a self-taught artist. She is a master at illustration and has been creating acrylic on canvas for the last 10 years. Her work captures the journey of her life as an artist; a full life journey taken along many different paths, yet totally aware of the natural beauty that surrounds her.
