  • Artist’s Statement

The landscapes of Western Canada are my greatest source of inspiration, from the Canadian Rockies just beyond my Calgary home to the rugged coastlines of the Pacific Northwest. My work is grounded in real places, but rather than recreating exactly what I saw, I reimagine familiar landscapes through bold colour, simplified shapes, and clean geometric lines.

My process is shaped by my background in engineering. Each painting begins with a pencil sketch and a digital colour study to refine composition, palette, and balance before the first brushstroke. Having a clear plan gives me the confidence to paint with intention, while still leaving room for the occasional happy surprise. There's no better moment than seeing a finished painting come to life just as I first imagined it.
My hope is that each piece invites you to pause, reconnect with nature, and see these places through a fresh perspective.

  • Biography

Ruolin Shi is a Calgary-based contemporary landscape artist inspired by the mountains, forests, and coastlines of Western Canada. Having lived in Ontario, Vancouver, Edmonton, Fernie, and now Calgary, she has developed a deep appreciation for the diverse landscapes that have shaped both her life and her art. Today, the Canadian Rockies and the Pacific Northwest remain her favourite subjects.
Working primarily in acrylic, Ruolin blends bold colour, geometric forms, and clean linear compositions, capturing the essence of a landscape rather than every detail.

An engineer by profession, Ruolin likes to say she's an engineer who creates art, and an artist who paints like an engineer. The two disciplines continually influence one another. Engineering brings structure, planning, and precision to her creative process, while painting invites curiosity, experimentation, and a different way of solving problems. The result is a body of work that balances order with creativity, transforming familiar landscapes into fresh, contemporary interpretations.
